Mob Mayhem
Term 2 2013

We have welcomed a number of new Joeys into our Mob last term and it is great to see our numbers growing.  Congratulations to Daniel, Samuel, Eloise, Jasper and Fraser on joining our Mob.
Although our visit to Keperra Sanctuary didn’t eventuate we have had a great term with lots of activities about caring for others including our activities on Harmony Day which we should earn an additional badge to wear on our uniforms for this year.
This year we have also introduced some new extension activities to earn additional badges.  Each of these extension challenges are to be completed over the whole term and when you have completed the activities you can return the sheet to Joeys and we will present a badge to you for your camp blanket.  This additional badge is NOT to go on your uniform.  These activities are something we have created just for our Mob to give some of our older Joeys some more challenges to complete prior to going on to Cubs.
We will have a new set of challenges each term to be done however if your Joey does not want to do these that is fine too.
Look out for the Adventure Challenge coming your way in term 2.
These activities will only be given to those Joeys who have already completed their Challenge Badges.
We have completed our Caring and Sharing Badge and these will soon be presented to those who have not completed this previously.
This Badge is to go onto the right hand sleeve of the uniform please see the handbook for positioning of these if you are not sure where to put them.
BRAVO on a job well done caring and sharing with everyone around us.
The Diamond Jubilee Badge we were wearing on the right hand side of the front of our shirts is now to be taken off the uniform.  Please have these removed prior to marching at Anzac Day.  This was a special badge for last year to celebrate this milestone for the Queen and it is now a badge that can be put onto a camp blanket

Term 2 will see us working on our Adventure Challenge Badge. Joeys who have not as yet earnt this challenge badge will earn it by attending the activities on this term.  Those Joeys who have been with us longer and have already achieved this badge will get some extra activities (as explained on the previous page) to do.
Our Harmony day activities were a great end to term 1 and our involvement in these have earnt us a Harmony day badge.  I am waiting on some confirmation in relation to where these badges go and if they are just a camp blanket badge or they can be worn on our uniform.  I will let you know as soon as I know.
We are sad to inform you that Bandicoot is no longer going to continue with us on a weekly basis as a leader.  Ben has lots going on for him at the moment including being Crew leader of our Rover Crew and working towards his BP award (the highest badge you can earn in Rovers)  So Ben has decided to focus his attentions towards these endeavors however will still be visiting at Joeys whenever he can.
As most of our Joeys are currently 7 years old they will all be working on their link into the Cub section over the remaining part of this year.  So what this means for us is that we really need some younger Joeys. We have some information postcards done up that we would love to be able to share with Prep and Year 1 children.  If you feel your child’s school would be receptive to these going home with younger children please come and see me so we can get them out.  We have sent these out at The Gap State School but if anyone has contacts at the other schools and would like to take some please let us know.  I can also get more printed if we need them.
And last but not least we are very excited to welcome a new leader to our group this term.  Todd has joined us after being a Joey Leader at Oakleigh Den.  He comes to our Mob with his 2 boys Aidan and Ryan and we hope you will join with us in welcoming them to our Mob.  Todd’s Scouting name is Dingo.
Welcome Back
First night back for the term we will be at the Den for our usual program.  This night will run 15min (approx.) over time, as we will be hearing from 2 of our Joeys who are linking up to Cubs and this will be Ryan and Hamish’s last nights at Joeys with us.  Our final parade will be at the same time as the Cubs opening parade with some very special things for our linking Joeys.  You are welcome to come and watch this event take place.
Anzac Day Marching 25th April
Each year we are invited by The Gap RSL to march down Waterworks Rd to the Memorial in Walton Bridge Park as part of the Anzac Day Celebrations.  We usually meet in The Gap State High School near the bottom gate closest to the shopping centre.  Please complete the attached form if you child is going to be marching with us.  You are welcome to watch the march and then join the service.  We will usually sit as a group together while the service is on and then we will wait in that area for you to collect your child after the service.
Full Uniform is to be worn for this March.  This includes shirts with correct badges, scarf and woggle, Navy or Black coloured shorts or long pants. Scout hat or Navy Hat. Closed in shoes with navy or neutral socks.
Please try to avoid bright coloured shorts or socks, we are teaching our children the respect of honouring those who have served our country.
Mother’s Night
Mum’s you are invited to share this night at Joeys with us. Come with a sense of adventure and joy in your hearts.  We will meet during our usual time.
Train/Citycat adventure
This is going to be a lot of fun.  We will be meeting at Ferny Grove train station and catching the train to Southbank where we will walk to the citycat and then travel around to New Farm Park.  There will be more information and permission forms coming out soon in relation to this adventure.
Hike to Police Station
We will be walking together to The Gap Police station where we will be meeting a police officer to look through their car and have a discussion with them about keeping ourselves safe. If time allows we will also have a play in the playground. .
Emergency
A time to put into practice some of those important skills we have been learning about this term in relation to contact phone numbers, What to do in certain situations if there is not a grown up around..
No Joeys on the Public Holiday relax and recover from your big weekend.
Tram Museum
This is a great time to experience travel from a little while ago.  The Joeys will have a wonderful time looking at lots of different trams.  More info to come

Linking to Cubs
We say a farewell to Ryan and Hamish on the 15th April as they make their transition over to Cubs from Joeys.  Boys we hope you have the best time in Cubs we will miss you at Joeys but know how much fun you are going to have.
Goodbye and Good Luck on the continuation of your scouting journey.
Promise Challenge Badge
A huge congratulations to Ryan Locke and Charlie Zannes who have both achieved the highest award in Joey Scouts their Joey Scout Promise Challenge Badge.
The boys have both done an excellent job presenting the activities they have done to the Mob and have been awarded this top honour.

BRAVO boys and remember to HOP whenever you can.

Term 1 2013
WELCOME BACK to another fantastic year of JOEYS in 2013.
We had an awesome end to the year last year with our fantastic sleepover at Underwater world which then followed into Christmas activities and our break up party.
We hope you have all had a relaxing holiday and are ready to jump into the new year.  We have been busy planning lots of awesome activities for us to do this year.
We also have a few Joeys, Finn, Ryan, Hamish and Herb who are going to be working on their Promise Challenge badge and then their link into Cubs as well.
As some of our Joeys have now been with us for a year and have completed the 4 participation badges, Brumby and I are working towards some other achievement badges for theses Joeys to work towards until they begin their link to Cubs.  More Info will be coming soon.
The biggest change for Joeys this year is our change of night.  We have decided to work with the change to Monday Nights from 5-6pm.   We will still have some weekend activities where we won’t then meet on the Monday as well.  Friday nights seem to conflict with so many other activities within our community and this is the main reason for our change.  Please talk to us if this is a big concern for your family.
Our first night back at Joeys will be in the second week of school on Monday 4th Feb we are looking forward to seeing you all then.
Contact Abroad
We have had contact through a friend of B’Nona’s with a Beaver Group in the UK.  Beavers are the equivilant to Joeys in the UK.  We will be sharing with this group via the internet and snail mail, pictures, letters and activities that we do at Joeys.  If you would like some more information about these activities please feel free to ask
Share the love
Share the love will be a night loosly based on Valentines day  We will be looking at how we can share our love with others in our family and community and the different forms this may take.
Founders Day
On Sun 24th there will be a district Founders day event.  The following is the only information I have on this activity at this point, I will let you know of further information when I receive it.
Please bring all the family along to share a BYO breakfast before we celebrate BP’s life in a short service followed by activities. All sections from throughout the District will be participating. Please wear full uniform, a shady hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and lots of water!
Prior to this day we will be doing some BP activities at Joeys.
Bring a Friend night
This is a special night for you to invite some friends to come along and experience Joeys for the night.  We invite all parents to stay on this night as while activities are being run for you Joey, B’Nona will be sharing our Out of the Pouch night with all of our parents both old and new or prospective Joey parents.  Please set this hour aside for us to be able to share with you all we have planned for the year and to answer any questions you may have.
Joey Hollow
We are looking at creating a space for the Joeys under one of our trees at the den.  This will be a place where we can sit and share some stories or have discussions together.
Easter Activities
We will be doing some great cooking and craft activities as well as practicing some songs to sing to the residents at Keperra Sanctuary just before Easter.
NOW for the all important general reminders:
Signing in and out
It is essential that we have details on who is at Joeys or not each week.  During our programs at the den there could be many circumstances arise where we need to check all the Joeys are accounted for. Please ensure that your child is signed in and out every week.  Joeys drop off and pick is a really busy time and the leaders can get tied up chatting to parents.  It is essential that we know your child has been collected and our sign in/out are our best record of this.
PLEASE ENSURE YOU SIGN IN AND SIGN OUT EVERY WEEK
Photos - We love to take photos of all the fun activities we do at Joeys.  Please let us know if you do not want photos to be taken of your child.  Any photos taken at Joeys are for the sole purpose of sharing these with families of our Joeys through newsletters and our blog.
Footwear - Please ensure your Joey is wearing appropriate footwear to our meetings each week.  We do a lot of fast paced activities at Joeys enclosed shoes with socks is the best footwear for the Joeys to have on. Preferably Joggers.  Please do not send your Joey in Crocs, Thongs or Sandals.
Joey Blog
Have you spotted yourself on the Joey Blog yet?  Lots of photos and details from our activities are up on the blog.  Feel free to follow us and leave any comments you feel you want too.

Term 4, 2012 News

Mob Mayhem
We have had a great term again and have been very busy with all our activities.  Joey Jaunt was a heap of fun for those Joeys who could make it.  We were able to do lots of different activities including go carts, rock wall climbing, rope bridges, chariots, singing, craft and enjoying a sausage or 2 for lunch.  We also had a great night visiting Samford Joey Mob and enjoyed doing lots of different science experiments with them.  Samford Mob visited us on Bucket night and the Tug of War was ruled a tie overall with us winning at out den. (Thank goodness)  Our trip to the science centre was lots of fun and enjoyed by those who could make it.  Brumby then let us explore further with lots more science experiments the following week and we all had a great time Bowling with our Dad’s.
What a busy term we have had.
Our Leaders
Our Joey Scout Leaders are all Volunteers to the scouting movement.  We do not get paid in any form except enjoyment for running the program for your children every week.  Our role as leaders goes a lot further than just the program each week as we also attend District and Group Meetings,  Planning Meetings and spend many hours of our own time preparing the program activities and preparing communications like this newsletter and emails to you for your information and enjoyment.
There are also Training weekends we have to attend in order to be a Leader of a group and be able to run the activities we do for your children.
Please understand that when we ask for paperwork etc to be completed and returned to us it is to protect ourselves and our family and property.  We don’t want to lose our houses over a lawsuit because an indemnity form hasn’t been signed.
We take all due care to ensure your children are safe at Joeys and it is for this reason we undertake all the training we do.  We also understand there is a mass of paperwork not only from Joeys but from school activities that needs to be processed by families every week.  Please support us in our endeavours to create a fun and exciting program for your children by returning forms as soon as possible.
INDEMITY FORMS
Within our program every term we plan outings in relation to our badges some of these are away from the den.  In order for us to continue with these activities we need your help in returning paperwork to us PRIOR to an event.  We try to get forms out at the beginning of the term for all activities in that term and are trying to combine return dates as much as possible.
It is a Scout Qld policy to have these forms for these outings.  As leaders we cannot take on the responsibility of your child without these forms signed and with us at the event.  Please help us to ensure the safety of your children by working with us on this.
Please take note of the Friday nights we are not at the Den we do have some away activities this term.  Usually if we have a Saturday or Sunday activity we do not meet on the Friday night.
Saturday 20th October we will be meeting at Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens.  From the carpark if you enter via the gate on the right hand side as looking at the restaurant follow the path to the left and we will be on the grassed area above the ponds.  This will also be the pick up point at 4pm.  If your family would like to join us for this activity please feel free to do so.
Nov 2, 16th, 23rd are all at the den during our usual times.
Friday 30th Nov we are planning on catching the 385 bus from the stop on Waterworks Rd outside The Gap State Primary School.  This activity is a city wide public event.  We are requesting that a Parent attends with every Joey for this activity.  This is to ensure the best supervision possible.  If you would like other family members to attend as well they are very welcome.
Each person attending this event must have a Current Go Card with a minimum of $10.00 credit on it. Also money to purchase a take away dinner.  Our plan is to travel into the city, view the Myer windows, Have dinner within the Myer Centre and then head to King George Square for the festivities of the night.  From the council website we have learnt that these festivities begin from 6.45pm and the lighting of the tree is approx 7.15pm.  This event continues on until 8.45pm, with each Joey having a parent with them you are welcome to stay for as much or as little of this activity from this point.

Change to Uniform
There has been a change in policy in regard to the large white Scouts Australia badge on our uniforms. As from 1 September this year, this badge is to be removed for good. The Joeys will have received a Diamond Jubilee Badge which is to be worn for the rest of this year in the same place that the White Scout badge was. The white badge can then be sewn onto camp shirts or blankets.
Joey Blog.
I have had problems with a computer dying of a virus at home which is the computer which has all my photos on it.  As soon as it is back up and alive again I will continue to update the Blog.
Have you spotted yourself on the Joey Blog yet?  Lots of photos and details from our activities are up on the blog.  Feel free to follow us and leave any comments you feel you want too.

Term 3, 2012 News

Mob Mayhem
Welcome back to another Term of fun and excitment at The Gap Joey Scouts.
Last term was lots of fun and the Joeys all seemed to get very involved in all of our activities.  Highlights would have to be the Planetarium Visit which flowed over into the creation of our own cardboard rockets.  I know there were many parents over joyed to see those great creations heading home again at the end of the night.
Our sleepover night was also a lot of fun and the Joeys all did very well coping with a night away from Mum and Dad and the comforts of their own beds.
This term we are set to work towards our Buddy badge and will hopefully be linking up with another Joey group to visit.  Organising this has proven a little harder than we had anticipated and we will let you know if there are date changes etc as soon as we know of them.
We finally were able to invest Jordan at the end of last term as he managed to turn 6 in May and could be invested into the Mob Welcome aboard Jordan!.
Lily and Sage are now working towards their Promise Challenge Badges and will also be starting to Link into our Cub packs in the coming months.
Change to Uniform
So while you have the needle and thread out adding new badges to the uniform, there has been a change in policy in regard to the large white Scouts Australia badge on our uniforms. As from 1 September this year, this badge is to be removed for good. The right hand chest of the shirt will be used for wearing ‘special event’ badges.  So watch this space for further info. The white badge can then be sewn onto camp shirts or blankets.
Joey Blog
Yes it is finally up and running so If you just can’t find the email with all the program details on it there is now another place you can go
This is also linked to our Gap Scout Website so that other people can see all the fantastic things we do at Joeys.  Feel free to pass this link onto family members near and far too.
Please take note of the Friday nights we are not at the Den we do have some away activities this term.  Usually if we have a Saturday or Sunday activitiy we do not meet on the Friday night.  There is also a Thur Night activity when we are meeting with Samford Joey Mob.
Program
Our first 2 nights of term will be at the Den at usual time.
Thursday 26th July we will be visiting the Samford Joey Scout group and joining in with their program.  More details are on the attached form to be completed and returned by 20th July.
Joey Jaunt
This is a great activity held out at BP Park at Samford from 9.45am – 3pm.
We will be meeting at BP park at “The Gap Scout Marquee”  Beside the BBQ (which will be run by our Venturers)  I have asked Kaa to set up the rope bridge from our group for the day and he has agreed to do this for us.  So this leaves us fairly free to walk as a group around the activities.  We will stay together as a group and move to the different bases throughout the day so if you need to take your child to sport etc this is not a problem for them to come and go during the activity.  We would ask for some parents if possible to stay with us for some or all of the day to help with the progression of activities.
Please see attached form and return it to us by Friday 20th July  You will also note on this form that there is the option of a sausage and drink order to be put in for lunch.  This certainly makes lunch a very easy option and we can pre order not only for the kids but adults too.  Please complete this and return all money in an envelope by the above date.  BYO lunches are fine too as we will all be sitting to eat together.
Science Centre
This activity will be running from 1-4pm on Saturday 25th August we are leaving travel to and from up to individual families as this is easier on time constraints than travelling together.  Siblings are again welcome to join us for this activity but must be under the supervision of a parent for the duration of the activity.
Ten Pin Bowling
We have planned this night a little later so that Dad’s have a chance to get home from work and then come along bowling with us.  This is a special night for our Dad’s (If Dad can’t make it an Uncle, Grandparent or other friend is welcome to join with us)  Cost will be $7.00 per person bowling and this will cover shoe hire and one game.

Underwater World Sleepover
If you haven’t let us know of your interest in this activity please tell us asap if you would like to come.  We will be offering this outside our Joey group soon.
We have booked our group in to visit Underwater World on the 10th November 2012.  The cost of this activity is $80 per person and this includes:
            interactive touch pool experience
            an exclusive seal show
a behind the scenes tour and animal feeding
            a morning beach walk
all meals (Dinner, Supper and Breakfast)
We need a minimum of 25 paying people for this activity to go ahead.  We realise with the cost that this is also something families would want to plan for ahead of time.  Parents and siblings are welcome to attend this event as well and the cost is the same.  We are also happy to offer this opportunity to siblings of Joeys however if siblings are attending a parent will be required to attend with them.
We need to know who would be interested in attending this event ASAP so we can confirm numbers and if we need to open this activity to another Joey group to fill numbers.  The maximum number of attendees is 50 so get your forms back quick so we can secure your place.
This “I slept with the sharks” T-Shirt is available for pre orders at $15 each or $17.95 on the night as a souvenir of the event and is an additional option if wanted.
We have designed the show of interest form to include the option to pay off the cost of this trip into 4 equal payments of $20 each to be paid in the months leading up to this trip.  We hope that this may help with budgeting for this event.
Our group is also expanding all the time and we are looking at starting up a new Cub Pack and a new Scout Troup this year.  If you have an interest in taking up a role as a leader in any of these sections there is plenty of training provided free, as well as lots of other benefits of being involved in such a great movement.  Please talk to B'Nona or Hathi (Wayne Rentoul our Group Leader) If you are interested.

Term 2, 2012 News
Mob Mayhem
Wow what an amazing start to our year Term 1 was, a great time of meeting new friends settling into the group and a lot of fun programs as well.

We had a few mess arounds with some of our programs and we thank all our parents for being flexible when things don’t go to plan.  Some of the highlights from Term one included:

·        Visit from the Venturers for Icecream spiders and games that they played with us it was a fun night enjoyed by all
·        Our Water Games were great, with the favourite activity being the water rockets which the Joeys enjoyed over and over again.
·        Our visit to Keperra Sanctuary for Easter was also a wonderful experience and I have to Congratulate all the Joeys on amazing behaviour while they played Bingo with the residents.  We have received some wonderful feedback also from the Sanctuary saying the residents are still talking about how wonderful it all was weeks after the event.

We have farewelled Ethan, Angus, Gus and Jack who have resigned from the group.  However we have welcomed Thomas Matthew, Finn, Charlie and Jordan who have all joined with us this year.  Charlie, Matthew, Aidan and Thomas have all now been invested and we will be investing Finn, Joshua, Ethan and Jordan in the next Term

Sadly we have lost Kaa (Ian) as a leader at the end of last term.  Ian has children who are in Venturers and Rovers and he has moved to the Grovely group to set up a Rover Crew there with his children.  We wish Ian all the best in his new role as Rover Advisor and hope he can convert the Joey programs over for the Rovers.  We will hopefully still see Ian at some program events as we will be draining his brain of all his knowledge.

Our Term 2 focus will be on our Adventure Badge with lots of fun activities based around this theme.

Our first night back for Term 2 at usual time at the Den.  We will be working on some Anzac Day activities.

A Special Thank You

Rosa from Keperra Sanctuary has left a message for all the Joeys saying that the residents of the hostel enjoyed our visit very much and they hope we will come and visit with them again.  Weeks after our visit the residents are still talking about the fun they had with the Joeys.  Well Done Joeys.

I would also like to share how proud Sam and I were as leaders too, the Joeys conducted themselves in a very mature manner while on this visit.  It is a pleasure to be able to experience Joeys who are so well mannered and respectful of other’s around them.  I didn’t have to frown once.  Well done to everyone and Thank you to the Mum’s who stayed to help out on the day.
